How is an eye examination different from an eye test at an optician?
An optician measures your prescription to make glasses. An ophthalmologist also examines the health of the eye — pressure, lens, retina and optic nerve — which is what finds conditions with no symptoms yet, such as early glaucoma. The packages here are the latter, and most include a prescription check as well.
Will my pupils be dilated, and can I drive home?
Packages with a detailed retinal exam usually dilate the pupils, which blurs your vision and makes light uncomfortable for 4–6 hours. Have someone drive you, or come by public transport. Each package page says whether dilation is part of it.
How often should I have my eyes examined?
Adults with no symptoms and no chronic condition: every one to two years. From 40, or with diabetes, high blood pressure or glaucoma in the family: every year. Children should be examined before starting school and whenever their vision seems off.
